CHAPTER 12

The flurry of activity that followed passed in a bloody and rain-soaked blur. By the time the storm had passed over and the rain had stopped, they were in the cottage, Ash sitting in the front room, shaking and nursing a glass of brandy as he tried to process the shock. Now was not the time for grudges. The organisation would handle the police and set them to task. Mainly, this would be handled internally. It would yield faster results and get Beth home. At least, that was the plan, under the circumstances, the best plan they had and the best chance for Beth to come out of this alive and unharmed.

The fire crackled but its warmth did little to shake off the chill that ran to his bones as Ash sat there, hair still damp from the rain. His clothing was not dry yet but he just sat there in those wet clothes, staring off as he tried and failed to push away all the nightmares his tortured mind could conjure.

‘We have to get her back,’ he said in a hushed voice, gripping the glass tight as he finally sipped the brandy that Zara hoped would ease the shock. She was not much better off either. She had the training to deal with events like this and worse – but when it was personal? A different story.

‘We will get her back,’ she assured him, pacing the front room now with her weapon holstered at her side. She had changed into dry clothing and had snapped back into work mode so fast it was as if she had never spent the past few days trying to bury the past. Ash looked up at her sharply, his eyes burning with a mix of fear for his daughter and fierce determination in his eyes. ‘I'll get her back. I'll get her back and I'll destroy the bastards who took her!’

She nodded, then went over to where he sat, kneeling on the floor as she looked intently at him, silently willing him not to fall apart. He was too close to this, of course he was, but he needed to do all he could to get his daughter safely back home. Suddenly rage burned in his eyes as he thought of the kidnapper, bleeding out at the roadside as his daughter was snatched up by the car and driven off, leaving the stranger in the rain, blood pumping from her leg.

‘Is that... that cunt awake yet?’ His voice shook as he spoke and rage still burned in his eyes.

‘She will be soon. I temporarily patched up the wounds. We can't have her bleeding out before she tells us what she knows. Do you want to get the info or shall I do it while we wait for the cavalry?’

He took a couple of breaths, then held back on weeping more tears as pain etched across his face.

‘Torture... Jesus, I never thought I'd have to...’ He shook his head. ‘This isn't supposed to be happening, not with a suspect.
